Strathpuffer, Scottish Highlands
For those of you who don’t mind freezing conditions, miles of challenging and steep terrain, and topping it all, riding in darkness, then the Strathpuffer 24 hour event could be right up your street. Held annually in winter, with the genuine possibility of snow and ice, combined with hail, mud and wind, this is a challenge which is not for the faint-hearted.
Transcend Bike Festival, Peebles
The Tweed Valley in Scotland is the setting for numerous challenges for mountain bike riders of all abilities, and the Transcend event is now a major festival, complete with camping. Not only are there biking challenges, but also entertainment, demonstrations and displays from all the major manufacturers of bikes and accessories.
‘Ard Rock Enduro, North Yorkshire
This is known as the UK’s top mountain bike festival, held during the first weekend in August, and includes the opportunity to race on alpine-style terrain. Live music, food and drink are all on hand, making it an ideal occasion for all the family to enjoy. The Enduro Sprint is a particularly popular challenge, covering over 2000 metres of relentless climbing and descending. You may prefer the MTB Marathon, which comprises a course of approximately 40 miles through the Yorkshire Dales, only recommended for those with a good level of fitness.
